No Lesbians in Singapore's cinemas

For four Oscars, the U.S. comedy "The Kids Are All Right" is nominated - in Singapore it just barely sidestepped a performance ban. The reason: The main characters are a lesbian couple, the film goes into the search for the sperm donor for their children.

According to the guidelines of the authority: "films with homosexual themes and scenes (...) can only be shown at the International Film Festival and are not approved for commercial use. That nearly caused the film to be banned. The filmmakers in Singapore can only shake their heads: "This is ridiculous," says the filmmaker Eric Khoo. "I'm shocked such a thing has never happened before." And Lesley Ho, the former director of the Singapore International Film Festival, can not understand the decision: "I thought we were grown up, I am flabbergasted."

Ultimately, the censorship authority of the city-state has released the film has released over 21 years. Since there is only one copy of the film throughout Singapore a performance of the critically acclaimed film for a cinema is not particularly attractive.
