Heinz-Ansmann Award goes to inventors of a mathematical model to combat resistances in HIV drugs

The Saarbrücken and bioinformatics at the Max Planck Institute for computer science, Professor Thomas Lengauer is, together with the Cologne physicians Rolf Kaiser and Mark Ötte the Heinz-Ansmann-Prize was awarded for AIDS research.

A team of scientists and clinicians, led by Lengauer, together with Rolf Kaiser (Institute of Virology, University of Cologne) and Mark Oette (Hospital of the Augustinians Cologne), has created more than ten years, the data base, and develops the computational methods to resistance of HIV to investigate against various drugs. Lengauer is the first non-physician, who was honored with this award.

The Max-Planck-Institute under Thomas Lengauer line developed on the basis of the collected data, a software that proposals for the composition of each individual AIDS patients for list of ingredients makes. The program is freely available on the Internet ( www.geno2pheno.org ). It estimates the degree of resistance of the virus variants found in patients with the individual ingredients and ingredient combinations classified according to the likelihood that the virus effective against. Different virus variants have namely resistance to different drugs. Worldwide, there were already more than 250,000 requests to the geno2pheno server.

The basis for this novel approach to investigate virus-resistance, mathematical models to discover hidden patterns in data collection and relationships. This mathematical and systematic approach is an important alternative to current methods of resistance determination based solely on clinical expertise. "Studies have confirmed that the mathematical approach is more accurate than the expert-based approach, once data are available in sufficient quantities and appropriate quality," said Thomas Lengauer.

The results of the studies can Lengauer, Kaiser and Oette include basis of the German-Austrian guidelines for the treatment of HIV infection and have led to standardized testing today that will accompany therapy on drug resistance of the virus. Thus, the researchers transferred knowledge from basic research directly into clinical practice.

The Heinz-Ansmann Prize for AIDS Research is endowed with 15,000 €. He has been awarded since the eighties, every two years. Founder is the Düsseldorf Heinz-Ansmann-Stiftung for AIDS research. Lengauer Thomas was involved in the last two decades are key partners in the development of bioinformatics in Germany and beyond. He has been honored for his contributions in this area already with the Konrad Zuse Medal and the Karl-Heinz Beckurts price.
