Embattled UNAIDS director asks Germany to reinstate their funding

Michel Sidibé, executive director of the AIDS Programme of the United Nations UNAIDS, held on 8 February 2011 in Berlin for talks on. Sidibé met with Foreign Minister and Health Minister Westerwelle Rösler.

Sidibé requested Germany in the talks to get his (and financial) commitment to the fight against AIDS upright. Only a few days earlier, Minister of Development Niebel, following allegations of misappropriation of funds in some recipient countries had stopped the payments to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, and expressed a desire to make additional payments of its own investigations dependent. Germany has so far with 398 million U.S. $ (2009) after the U.S. and the UK's third largest donor country in the international fight against AIDS.

Sidibé also called on the federal government to play an active role in the UN General Assembly on HIV / AIDS in June 2011 in New York and to ensure participation at the highest possible level. Rösler, as well Westerwelle expressed their interest in participating.

Sidibé stressed in his talks, including with parliamentarians, the need for prevention measures for particularly vulnerable groups such as HIV gay men, sex workers, transgender or drug users. He also pointed out that trade agreements should not lead to barriers in access to antiretroviral therapies.

The day before, Sidibé was at a meeting of senior lawyers and judicial leaders spoken in Kampala and invited States to act against discrimination and injustice. Laws should never endanger health or survival of an individual.
