This dampened the hopes of the gay community. After the resignation of the openly homophobic former mayor Yuri Lutzkow the community was hopeful, that CSD Parades would be approved in the future. Lutzkow had forbidden the parade year after year, and even called it 'satanic'.
Sobyanin said in a radio interview about lesbian and gay parades: "Moscow doesn't need that at all, and I do not support that."
He seems to continue the course of his predecessor - but that has already proven to be expensive for Russia. The CSD Organizer Nikolai Alexeyev successfully complained before the European Court of Human Rights against the principle of prohibition of the parade - and won! The Russian state was found guilty and forced to pay Alexeyev 12,000 euros for non pecuniary damage and € 17,510 for his expenses.
