Interview with Wieland Speck about the Teddy Awards 2011

Berlinale Special SIS - SIS: What are the highlights of the Panorama (Berlinale section editor's note)?
Wieland Speck: It is a year for people who are located between the sexes. "Tomboy" and "Romeo" are two excellent films from France and Germany on a roughly eleven-year old boy and a man of about 20, both stuck in a woman's body, absolutely authentic stories. With "Ashamed" is the first lesbian film from South Korea, "Mountain" from Norway is a very adult story about a lesbian parents. A great film from Poland is still effective, the accusation of homosexuality, "Together" from China is a well-made documentary on AIDS. From India there are three contributions: "għandu" has a juvenile-erotic component, and shows how an angry young man and try to be something hilarious friend to position themselves in everyday life. Another film tells the story of a woman who murdered seven of her husbands. A woman in the lead role is a rare thing in India, the movie breaks a lot of taboos. And we have a lot of interesting side stories in the queer films that has become more common.

Which direction do you give the TEDDY for the next few years? Directionally you can actually say very little. We're a festival that shows films that others have done, that is, we see what the manufactured zeitgeist, we see what you want to see the spirit of the times and try at this point, raising the bar. We simply say that these films that we show here are ennobled by our choice and the success they in the audience and then of course the European film market have, we have established as a program-makers to ensure that the films have a better standing. That is, we also create audience for movies that are perceived from a purely commercial thinking her often difficult. These are our tasks are not going to change, and that brings tens of thousands in Berlin. As long as this is successful, inevitably this has an impact in Berlin's sense, because Berlin is not only the city with the promise of happiness in a financially low level, but we work that way. It fits seamlessly into the city and keeps me way too many years at this point.

Why the TEDDY is important even after 25 years?
There is a prize for films that otherwise often get the prices. The other aspect is that it produces a binding element by kuckt to something that normally separates. If you're traveling with a minority issue, the majority often reacts in such a way that they feel excluded or reset itself. The teddy bear makes this step, invites them to his party and what happened there, I actually know of any other party in the world. There are all age groups from the area queer, what has been otherwise rare, there you have all the people you can imagine - and even totally mixed with straight people. There's still quite a bit pie in it, especially since the spots on the globe where queer people can live fairly reasonable, still pretty small. There is still much to conquer and seduce.
