For the first time ever, a European professional footballers outed as gay. In an interview with the football magazine "Offside", the 20-year-old Anton Hysén to his homosexuality.
Hysén recently played games, he still, for the first division side BK Hacken and was considered one of the most promising talents in Sweden. After several injuries, he moved to the fourth division Utsiktens BK. He is the son of former Liverpool player Glenn Hysen.
In the "Offside" interview he makes clear: "I am a gay soccer player and if I take as a footballer, I do not think it is important whether I am on girls or boys..." That has yet outed no other Swedish football player, "pisses me," said Hysén continued: "Where the hell are all the others?" With his coming out he wants to show that it is possible for a player to stand by his sexual orientation.
Hysén is clear that his outing could harm the career: "It could be that a club is interested in me - and then listened to the coach that I am gay, and then they may suddenly change their mind." Nevertheless, he is to have safe, made the right decision. Because of today HySense sexual orientation is on the court no longer his problem, but that of the club.
Anton Hysén gets support from his brother Tobias, who plays for the Swedish national team: "Hopefully more people will now have the courage to come out to this courageous decision."
